Fox News, III
Once Ailes was on board, he was used to train and create news reporters, people that could really ignite an audience. It certainly worked, as Ailes put new candidates through intensive training before allowing them on air. He broke the candidates down using 14 hour working days and several weeks of training. This was prior to the main launch of the new Fox News channel which would go live October 7, 1996.
The start of the Fox News Channel was extremely slow. Upon the launch the amount of households available to watch was limited to around 10 million. Even worse was the fact that the huge media markets of New York City and Los Angeles were not being targeted. They kept things tight under wraps though, with reviewers of the channel having to come to the actual studio to view it.
Whilst the channel did do some feature headlines, it was more of an on topic type scenario to begin with. For example, Fox News Channel started with the likes of Fox on Crime or Fox on Politics. This was in an effort to differentiate themselves from the likes of ABC and NBC.
In recent years, things have changed for the better for Fox News Channel. They use high definition channel simulcasts, but only in certain places. Eventually they needed some help, so it was time for Time Warner Cable to step in, covering areas such as New York, NY and San Antonio.
DirecTV was certainly a huge step for the corporation, which was originally launched in 2008. Since then, Fox News has continued to increase its database of loyal viewers and further developments were not far behind. Cox Communications and Dish Network were to act as catalysts to increasing the popularity of the HD channel, as they introduced them to their schedule in January 2009 and February 2009.
Nowadays there are many avenues for a media company like Fox News Channel to gain more viewers. It used to be that the channel offering the most screen time was likely to be the top news broadcasting channel. For now, news channels can promote themselves via other forms of media such as Radio and even Online, which is exactly what Fox News Channel is doing.
