Discovery Channel, Vol. 3

The Flight that Fought Back and Deadliest Catch were smash hits for the channel throughout 2006. In fact, they were probably the main reason that The Discovery Channel managed to pick up a huge seven Emmy Award nominations.

Moving forward to 2007, the channel focused on bringing something new to viewers. They introduced Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe which was an instant smash hit. This was likely to be watched by people who were already hooked on current series such as Planet Earth, MythBusters, and Deadliest Catch. Fight Quest and Smash Lab were the new series that were announced for the year, which kicked up some interest in the channel.

Today if anyone mentions The Discovery Channel, then there are few people who fail to understand what they mean. In fact, the channel is hitting 92 million households in the US alone. That is nothing in comparison to its audience that is on a worldwide scale, in over 400 countries including United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

The last few years have seen rapid growth for the Discovery Channel team. In fact, it has become so popular that the channel has decided to create a radio channel. Audio versions of many programs were broadcast up until 2005 by XM Satellite Radio and by Sirius Satellite Radio right up until 2007. Since then the Discovery Channel Radio feature has died down some what.

Canada is also a huge part of the branding of this channel. In fact, with their own separate entity, Discovery Channel Canada are looking to become just as big there are an are in America. Whilst the majority of the content here is the same, there are the odd blocks of programming that get chopped and changed to try and better suit the Canadian audience.

Whilst there are many segments of Discovery Communications, each one retains 80% ownership, with Discovery Communications taking the rest. These channels include the likes of Discovery HD, Discovery Health, Discovery Kids, Discovery Civilization, and Animal Planet.

The popularity of The Discovery Channel shows no bounds. First it attacked the United States and it came out on top supplying over 90 million homes. Next it went to town on the rest of the world and again came out on top, supplying over 430 million homes world wide. The only major downfall that they have had since beginning is creating a radio station that the majority of people just really did not want.
