MTV is one of the most popular television Networks that is based in the United States. The idea was created, the details were developed and it was eventually launched on August 1, 1981. Whilst the intent for the network was to solely play music videos and be aided by hosts, this basic idea was soon snowballed into a full scale television network. As of today, MTV does play a range of smash hit songs, but it focuses on broadcasting things such as popular culture alongside popular reality TV shows. The target audience is the likes of teen agers and young adults.

MTV did actually have a huge impact on the world right from the launch. Popular culture and the music industry had never been exposed to this kind of media and it allowed everyone access to behind the scenes. Brand image was important in the early going to ensure that people knew exactly what they were watching and why. The likes of “I want my MTV” were great slogans to kick off the spirit that was to stay with MTV for years to come.

The popularity of having a host on a music show (also known as a VJ) continued to grow and before they knew it, MTV had competitive channels trying to copy cat their ideas. It also allowed people in the music industry to show the public a different side of music, by linking the best songs and tunes to interactive videos, expressing an artist in their entirety. Before long, MTV had become the central hub for the likes of music events, news relating to artists, not to mention great music. It is so popular that it gets mentioned on many TV channels across the globe, not to mention endless amounts of literature, movies and other TV Shows.

Since its launch, the MTV network has consistently grown. Nowadays they have sister channels in not only the US, but also affiliated channels that are shown on an international basis. A lot of people find that MTV can be a driving force to persuade young people, some see this as a bad thing, where as some feel that this is a good thing.
